February 12 is my birthday and this year I wanted to be different, so I placed an order for 2 custom fragrances at La Via del Profumo, which I named Epiphany and Insouciance.
Epiphany’s ingredients include Oakmoss Extract, Vetiver Haiti, Cocoa, Rose (Turkish) E.O., Honey Bee – Beeswax, Rum and Sandalwood Indian Album; Insouciance’s ingredients include Osmanthus, Grapefruit, Labdanum, Oakmoss Extract, Vetiver Haiti, Muskrat tincture and Sandalwood Indian Album.
They’re all great, and Epiphany smells like a young executive sipping cocoa liqueur at a bar because of the company’s successful IPO. He’s always calm with his work, but even at this point he’s in a mood for excitement.
Insouciance is an incredible masterpieceï¼I chose the ingredients to create a traditional Chypre note, and since I’m Chinese, I chose osmanthus as the floral note, and AbdesSalaam Attar understood exactly what I was thinking and managed to create a bottle of traditional Chypre note with a Chinese touchï¼Great workï¼

I’m stunned. Awestruck. Words don’t do this justice, but I must try. My very first thought was, it’s as if Salaam gathered precious flowering plants from an imagined fantasy land and transformed it into liquid, together with the headspace of other imaginary scents that must have been in its daydreamt surroundings. It’s transparent and deeply hypnotic at the same time. Two qualities I don’t think I’ve encountered in a single perfume together.

I ordered a custom perfume from Salaam, this is the first time I design the perfume I want, I named it Amrita Dorée.
I let it rest for two weeks after I received it, then sprayed myself 12 times and basked in this naturally beautifully fragrant clouds.

The seven main ingredients I chose were: Frangipani, Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine, Ambrette, Rum, Vanilla, wanting to create a tropical yellow floral feast featuring Frangipani, fertile, euphoric and narcotic, with Rose and ylang-ylang as the foils.
The perfumer blends them skillfully and harmoniously, and the result is so beautiful, with rounded, rich creaminess, waxiness and golden sweetness. Rose and yellow florals work well together, luscious, lush florals spread over a warm bed of musky vanilla, when the rosy color fades, leaving the real frangipani scent I’ve been looking for, pure sensuality.

Sounds very feminine, but I think he can be worn by anyone who loves tropical floral scents, regardless of gender.
I am pleasantly surprised at how close the custom fragrance made it to my heart, and it also has Abdes Salaam Attar’s DNA, graceful and spiritual. The perfumer is truly a master whose creations have always spoken directly to my heart and never disappoint me.

Again, I am deeply grateful for an original perfume beautifully composed of my chosen notes, here interfused with mellow sandalwood (India album) and a nuanced tang of ginger.

Axios by @laviadelprofumo. For years, Axios has been my exclusive scent for Easter, the one that I wear once and only once a year. A bespoke blend created after my nightly discovery of a hidden Orthodox church in Paris on the night of the Easter vigil, Axios is a fulsome blend of Frankincense, Myrrh, Beeswax and Cinnamon. This year was the first time I wore it twice, at Easter and at my best friend’s burial, a subtle and fragrant reminder that death is a mere breaking of the mirror, a pass that was once and for all trodden, that the hope of the afterlife shines high and bright, like the candles flickering on the stairs leading to this wooden church, that night of the Easter Vigil. As with all Abdessalaam’s creations, Axios is a masterful example of equilibrium, harmony, and tenacity, an ultimate lesson on natural perfumery. Who could, from materials so impossibly dense, make light spring and sparkle. This year, Axios took upon a new meaning. Axios » that is worthy: worthy of crossing the gates into the Undying Gardens.

    Consolamini, personalized perfume for ThePerfumedCronicles

… Consolamini, an exclusive work by Abdessalaam Attar for The Perfume Chronicles was created from this memory – and a good dose of chance. The legendary mastery of its creator is yet again revealed through the utmost simplicity of an castoreum, frankincense and tonka bean accord. It is a perfume where the heat of castoreum joins the roundedness of coumarine and where the leather of a tonka bean burnishes the animalic bitterness of mastic.

Half Pegasus, half Seraphim, Consolamini is an ever-changing creature. It is a stained-glass window through which pierces the light of a Sun showing new colours. It hides the fire of Judea’s earth and the heat of its caravanseries; it is the cloud of incense wrapping Isaiah whilst his lips were covered in embers.

Exquisite balance between round and dry hues, between the sour and the gourmand without ever falling into any, Consolamini is this verse of Isaiah in a bottle : “Comfort my peopleâ€. Its old resins to a ray of divine light akin, go through one’s soul to cleanse it : ‘tis the fire which refines silver but always that of love which warms up our hearts.

For such is Consolamini’s purpose: a spiritual perfume allowing us to see beyond appearances, to open up our hearts to those in need so they may shed their tears. Consolamini is the keystone of our inner cloister, the key to our heart’s secret chambers.

AbdesSalaam Attar proves us once more his profound knowledge of raw materials and his ability to let them shine and speak. Consolamini is a gem, a perfume that only those willing to open their hearts can wear.

    Dear Abdessalaam Attar,

I received the bespoke perfume Stardrift yesterday. I was delighted at the sight of the generous bottle of golden liquid. Then, I found the perfume to be the most sublime of any perfumes that have jasmine as a major accent. The perfume is beautifully blended with fine longevity. I am so grateful! Sincerely, Heidi

    Profumo’s personal perfumes
    August 16, 2016

Dominique Dubrana sent me two bespoke perfumes he did for clients and found especially satisfying. He is a French-born self-taught perfumer working in Italy, and spends a lot of his time in the South Sahara building water pumps for local villagers. I have been fond of his work for years, not least because he embodies the fact that the most important thing for an artist to have is talent. You can learn most everything except talent, and he is a natural-born perfumer. We have never met, but he sends me emails and the occasional parcel, most recently his aphrodisiac mix Libidyn. It arrived accompanied by an exhortation to produce a larger family. It smells great, and I plan to report on its efficacy in due course.

Bespoke perfume, as practiced by a few famous perfumers working for large firms, is tiresome nonsense. It is predicated on three unlikely notions all being true: 1- That there is one perfume that best fits your soul 2- That the perfumer will divine which it is in the course of a one-hour interview conducted in a limo coursing through Paris and 3- That she will set aside the much more urgent work her boss is nagging her about, i.e. that shampoo version of the big seller, and focus entirely on satisfying your little narcissistic fit. That will be $200,000, thank you. I wonder how much Paul Auster would charge to write a book just for one person.

Dubrana’s approach is much cleverer and less onerous, but requires a little more knowledge from the buyer. He asks you to chose and rank 7 materials you like best from a list of approximately eighty. He then composes a fragrance for you, mostly from those seven materials. He charges €240, and the process takes two weeks. He did a violet-iris one for me several years ago which I liked very much. The two he sent me are Cuoio dei Dolci (Sweet Leather) and Nicolaya. CdD was composed for a dentist who specified castoreum, tonka and tobacco in that order, followed by cocoa, vanilla, ylang, and mandarin. Dubrana rose to the challenge and produced a delicious confection, a sort of gingerbread ottoman that hits all the buttons as required, yet works nicely as a whole. The whole idea is fun and, given his skill, will smell good no matter how cockeyed your list is. I can think of far stupider ways to spend €240.
